Lantlôs – .neon (2010)
‘.neon’ takes the introspective aspect of the debut and expands on it by using elements lifted from post-rock and shoegaze and fit them into a black metal mould. In this way Lantlôs succeeds in playing aggressively and still retain melancholy and create a sense of longing simultaneously. This amalgamation was already present on ‘Lantlôs’ but now the process feels more natural and the music is all the more contemplative for it. The resulting effect on the listener is an emotional draining and a truly engaging experience. ‘.neon’ features some progressive tendencies in the form of jazz inspired calm interludes which offer some breathing space in between the asphyxiating black metal. They also provide a platform to start or end tension arches adding a sense of conclusion to songs. New vocalist Neige (Alcest, Amesoeurs) predominantly sticks to his trademarks screeching but also finds room for clean parts in the song ‘Pulse/Surreal’ that are more reminiscent of early Opeth than his work with Alcest. Lantlôs has taken their artistry to a new level and scope and I expect that ‘.neon’ will be very influential to the development of the post black metal movement. (SOURCE)
