That ancient Dacian, pagan current of the album carries you through the commanding arrangements of harsh vocals, chants, mid-tempo bm riffs, folk instruments, keys, and double bass. Lulling you one moment, haunting you another, then crushing you the next...like nature itself. In a similar manner to the opening track 'Pămînt', things gradually build as the album goes on. Upon first listen, I truly liked "Vîrstele Pămîntului", but it was after repeated listens that I came to love this album.
Although excellent, the primarily atmospheric tracks 'Pămînt', 'Umbra', and 'Întoarcerea amurgului' began to lose their feel after awhile, and with the exception of 'Pămînt', contained the mild use of an xylaphone that my brain couldn't quite wrap around.
My personal favorites are 'Dacia hiperboreana', 'Chei de rouă', 'Tara de dincolo de negură', and 'Arborele lumii', which I found on repeated listens were most enjoyable and never lost intensity.
"Vîrstele Pămîntului" is without a doubt a masterly effort from start to finish. Black Metal has come to mean many things to many people whether anyone likes it or not, and the sub-genres just keep on coming. So, for those who prefer their bm more pagan/folk/nature than say the satanic side of things (argue with your own friends about it), I don't see how you could not have every Negură Bunget album in your collection. 2010 is off to a great start, and "Vîrstele Pămîntului" is another serious contender for album of the year. Nothing more to say.
