This is also one of the oldest blackened viking/folk metal bands around forming in 1989. DevilDriver - Beast (2011)

The long awaited DevilDriver release is finally out. In my opinion, it's better the its predecessor - Pray for Villains.

Basically, it's a perfect blend of groove and death metal. The riffs really stand out and are solid as fuck. The drums are killer with massive number of fills, so they can't bore you. And to top it all off, those recognizable sick bark-like Dez Fafara vocals are still there.

Give it a go, it's actually quite good.

Hibria - Blind Ride (2011)

Arafel - For Battles Once Fought (2011)

Re-upped. Helge Stang of ex-Equilibrium (Germany) fame does vocals for this band! just had to throw that out there. This is Arafel's third release and it took them 6 years to release it, it's about time. Arafel are a cool band I discovered some years ago who play symphonic black/folk metal and come from Tel Aviv, Israel. I recommend giving the band a try. Short review, yes, but just let the music do the talking. You should like this if you are a fan of symphonic metal, melodic black metal, death metal, or folk metal. Dreamshade - What Silence Hides (2011)

This new wave of melodic death metal is coming from Switzerland, a country which has never given birth to any important act of this genre. I've yet to find an Icelandic black metal album I didn't enjoy (that isn't a challenge). This EP (though it clocks in at near full album length) is a distillation of every good black metal album to come out of Iceland in the last decade. Fast, violent, thunderously aggressive, remarkably well recorded, and a bass that you can hear! These guys show not only a very high level of musicianship, but also some real songwriting talent. Carpe Noctem is well constructed, well executed, modern black metal that stays true/tr00 to all our grim and frostbitten traditions.

Black Sheep Wall - I Am God Songs (2008)

One of heaviest fucking albums in the fucking history of heavy albums. This will rip your face off and put it through the meat grinder, and hand it back to you with a pretty pink bow to reassemble. Black Sheep Wall is the definition of down-tuned fuck-shit-up music, blending stoner rock and sludge rock with the irresistible urge to punch babies in order to create some seriously brutal tracks. Best listened to on a massive stereo with thumping bass and the blood of four to seven goats on hand. Good for a few listens when you're in the mood.

Circle Of Dead Children

Early spring cleaning. I'm combining the posts we had by CODC to one.

Circle Of Dead Children are a pretty interesting deathgrind band, their style isn't really comparable to anything. Songs range from 6 seconds to several minutes. The atmosphere is indescribable, and varies in every song - there's blasting brutality interchanging with slow, doomy bludgeoning, accompanied with some of the most awesome vocals in extreme metal. Joe Horvath's voice might be hard to get used to for some, but in my opinion he is one of the best. The lyrics also need to be mentioned: while the music manages to be brutal, filthy, and disgusting, the lyrics are beautiful poetry. CODC are not your typical run of the mill deathgrind band. Some might find it hard to get into them, I wasn't hooked by the first listen either, but they're outstanding in many aspects, and take some time to comprehend. (worm's original writeup)

Sun Of The Blind - Skullreader (2009)

Sun of the Blind is a one man project/offshoot from the slightly better known Darkspace. While this album gives off a similar feeling, it is a different take on atmospheric black metal; specifically: crank down the black metal, turn up the atmosphere. The drumming takes a noticeable and (probably) deliberate back seat throughout, letting the guitars grate out some spacey stuff. Pretty slow paced album, good for when you're in the mood for some easy listening of a more kvlt flavor. Great pick up for fans of Darkspace, Wormlust, Haud Mundus, Fell Voices, and Schmerz.

Angtoria - God Has a Plan for Us All (2006)

A well known Sarah Jezebel Deva project. Remember the fat chick who did the vocals for Cradle of Filth? Yes, that one!

This is her project, with a lot of guest appearances. The members are from the UK and Sweden, but they seem to colaborate very well. The sound of it is pretty difficult to describe, so I'll just throw in a couple of words: orchestral, oriental, atmospheric, dark, divine, metal. There, that'll do.

So, anyway, if you're in the mood for some anti-religious trippy metal music with some beautiful, and I can't stress that word enough, vocals - this'll be a treat for you.
